Kurupt Shares His Thoughts About Lyrics Being Used Against Rappers in Court

Young Thug, Gunna and YSL's RICO case remains one that Hip-Hop is voicing its opinion about. On May 9, an 88-page, 56-count indictment named Young Thug and fellow Atlanta rapper Gunna, along with over two dozen others, as alleged conspirators in an organized crime organization. Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound recently spoke with VladTV's Shirley Ju about the case, in which the rappers' lyrics are being used against them in court.

The Kuruption! MC suggested that people of color need to be mindful of what they say and do.

"Hopefully they'll be able to beat that thing," he said. "They out to get us. When you young and Black — whatever your nationality is — when you're young and making that money legally they're always gonna try to find something to take you down. They don't want to see you with that money so you gotta be careful because you can't do both. You can't be on the left and right side of the track."

Kurupt isn't totally convinced that there is any evidence against Young Thug and company.

"Who's to say they're guilty of anything in the first place? They say they got tapes, they got this, and that, and they are tryin' to indict these young men; they gonna be just fine because they're in God's hands."

In a virtual court appearance yesterday (July 8), Gunna was denied bond again. Currently facing one count of conspiracy to violate RICO, he's expected to remain in jail until the January 2023 trial date. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports prosecutors in the case alleged Thug and his YSL associates had made “numerous threats to kill or harm witnesses." Gunna has said that he's being "falsely accused."

West Coast legend Ice-T shared his thoughts on the case last month.

"It's easy to make the streets think you're a gangster," he said. "It's hard to convince the Feds you're not."
