Megan Thee Stallion Opens Up About Depression On 'Cobra': 'Every Night I Cried, I Almost Died'

Megan Thee Stallion opens up about struggling with depression on her new song, "Cobra." The track is her first solo release since Tory Lanez was jailed for shooting her in 2020, and the Houston rapper gets very transparent about her struggles with suicide and hurt over a cheating ex on the track.

"Just like a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past, over and over again," she says at the opening of the song. The video, directed by Douglas Bernardt, follows the theme of the song, a metaphor for releasing the past in favor of new life. In an Instagram post, she explained cobras "exemplify courage and self-reliance."

In April, Megan revealed she had grappled with depression following the shooting. However, she said she's enthusiastic about returning to music, describing it as a "reawakening of a happier and healthier" version of herself.

"Breakin’ down and I had the whole world watchin’ / But the worst part is really who watched me / Every night I cried, I almost died / And nobody close tried to stop me," she rhymes on the first verse, while on the second verse she details her pain over dealing with an unfaithful lover. "Ayy, damn, I got problems/Never thought a bitch like me would ever hit rock bottom/Man, I miss my parents, way too anxious, always cancel my plans / Pulled up, caught him cheatin', gettin' his dick sucked in the same spot I'm sleepin' / Lord, give me a break, I don't know how much more of this shit I can take..."

"Cobra" marks Megan's first independent release since parting ways with her label.
