Roots drummer and music historian Questlove has received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature, for Summer of Soul at the 94th  Academy Awards. Nominees were announced on Tuesday (Feb. 8) morning via livestream and the Oscars website. After the announcement, Questlove shared his excitement via Twitter.

“Oscar Nominated Film Director Questlove," he tweeted. "I just need to see this in print!!!!!!!!!”

The film first premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and features unreleased and forgotten footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival; performances of soul legends including Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Sly Stone. After its official release, Summer Of Soul received several awards; including Critics Choice, Gotham Independent Film and National Board of Review awards.

Questlove recently spoke with The Los Angeles Times about the film. “I do wonder that, if there were a reframing in the telling of the story—that this was important just like Woodstock—could this have changed lives," he stated. "I absolutely think so."

“But here’s the other thing," he continued. "I feel that this film is still a baby. Like[,] it can still work its magic 50 years after the fact. This film has changed my life in ways that I can’t even explain, so just that alone the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to tell other music stories on this level shows how much it’s going to change and move somebody.”

The 94th Academy Awards broadcast air live on Sunday March 27th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC
