Too $hort Shows Oakland Love on ROCK THE BELLS' New Docuseries 'Flowers'

The debut episode of ROCK THE BELLS' new docuseries, Flowers, follows Oakland MC Too $hort as he is honored with the keys to the city, a holiday (Too $hort Day), and a street renaming (Too $hort Way).

The "Blow The Whistle" rapper describes how he called a few places home in his youth before settling in Oakland. "I was born on Sunset Blvd on the strip in Los Angeles," he said. " I stayed in L.A. up until I finished the sixth grade then my mother moved us to Atlanta which a lot of people don't know."

$hort explains that the infamous "Atlanta Child Murders" of the late 70s and early 80s are likely the reason that their Atlanta stay was brief. "I'm assuming my mother just couldn't take the stress of the 'Atlanta Child Murders'," he explained. "It was mostly young Black boys and I was 12, my brother was probably 14. My mother got the hell up outta there. We moved back to California, but instead of going back to L.A. we moved to the Bay Area."

$hort shows Oakland love for the remainder of the nine-minute piece, stressing the importance of supporting local businesses and reflecting on his growing up in the city.

"It's not just important to support local businesses, but that's where you get the best shit to represent your town," he said. "If you are the type that likes to wear your city on your back, you gotta go to the little hood spots and specialty shops. I like to buy Oakland shit and wear it to other cities. I love all the shit - the food, the people - everything."

When Short Dog receives his proclamation from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff, he shows the city more love. "Y'all are celebrating Too $hort, but I'm celebrating Oakland," he proclaims. "I know for a fact that Too $hort didn't come from Todd Shaw, it came from Oakland, California."
