Ice Cube Digs Stephen A. Smith's 'Next Friday' Skit on 'First Take'

Stephen A. Smith and Michael Irvin recreated a scene from Ice Cube's 2000 film Next Friday, to which Cube laughingly offered his approval.

Smith and the legendary receiver opened the show on Monday (Jan. 9) by recreating the scene where Pinky (Clifton Powell) confronts Cube's character Craig. The whole skit stemmed from the Dallas Cowboys' loss to the Washington Commanders (Irvin won three Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys while Smith is an avid NY Giants fan).

“Shut up,” Smith shouted at Irvin, in an imitation of Pinky. “Shut up! What happened to the Cowboys yesterday? What happened to them? Shut up! Say another word and this is over. What happened to the running game huh? What happened to the running game? Shut up!"

Cube saw the clip and gave the thumbs up. “They did that,” he said in a retweet of the clip.

Cube spoke about the impact of the Friday franchise in an interview with LL COOL J for ROCK THE BELLS radio, calling it the "most impactful" of the three films because of its anti-gun violence message.

“It was an important scene and that’s why the first Friday is so impactful over the other ones," he said. "Because if you look at the other ones, they don’t have that moment in the movie. So it took a comedy and it took the laughter, and it was a teachable moment. It was dramatic in a movie that was so funny. It was impactful because what he was saying was some real shit... It’s cool because it was like, ‘Yo, I would have never moved in this neighborhood if you needed a goddamn gun to walk down the street.’ That’s impactful. Before Friday, shit was so crazy in the hood when I had it written that [Witherspoon] was like, ‘You going down the street? Take this [gun] with you.'”
