Talib Kweli: "There Would Be No Talib Kweli Without DJ Quik"

DJ Quik was a guest recently on The People's Party Podcast where he was credited by host Talib Kweli as the man who started his recording career. "There would be no Talib Kweli as far as career-wise if it wasn't for you," Kweli revealed to Quik in the show's intro.

Kweli went on to explain that Quik and Snoop were on the radio when Talib dropped one of his first Hi-Tek-produced singles. "The West Coast loved this record," he said. "Hi-Tek's production chops really found an ear on the West Coast."

Talib Kweli says that Quik put "The Blast" in heavy rotation. "Shame on you New York," he said. "DJ Enuf supported the record in New York, but New York in general didn't support the record, it was L.A., you [Quik] in particular."

Kweli further credited Quik as the one who taught him the most about vocal recording. "When people ask me which producer was most influential, of course, I say Hi Tek, Madlib, Kanye and certain other people that I've worked with, but your name comes up for me," he said. "You taught me the most about vocal recording. You were the first person to produce vocals for me for 'Put It In The Air,' which is a record that sounds almost out of place on my album."

When asked how to get the best vocal performance out of an artist in the booth, Quik explains: "I always wanna do for the artist what I would do for myself when I'm producing myself. I challenge myself. I got that from Teddy Riley. If you're comfortable with it, get uncomfortable and do something bigger and better."
